O One concorporate with Your Consort whose visage
Is moon-like! O Lord who made Your advent
At Vennainallur to grant me deliverance!
O One who entered my soul and caused it
To shine in splendour! You revealed to me
The limitless and ineffable nature of Yourself –
The Supreme Ens -, and by that process revealed
To myself my true nature.
Let me now speak of my littleness and greatness.
With my book-learnt skill I descended into
The profoundest of depths and remained one
With all things I came into contact; it was
Through my barging into the apertures –
The pentad of senses -, I came to know
Of each and every thing; even then I was poised
In one of the five states of wakefulness,
Dreaming, deep sleep, cessation of temporary
Consciousness and protracted unconsciousness.
Quitting them I underwent transmigration.
Scrutinize and tell me which one of the three –
Ubiquitous pervasion, current embodiment
And life in paradise or inferno -, is truly
The soul’s nature. If you say all these three
Characterize the soul, it contradicts
Sat-Kaarya-Vaada which declares ‘it is what
Which is’ that manifests and that which is not
Does not manifest.
Soul cannot increase or decrease in size.
If this be true why is it huge in an elephant’s body
And small in an ant’s? Lo, this does not spell wisdom.
Again, if you say soul assumes a body – small
Or big-, in keeping with its Karma, then
It would mean that its intelligence is
Conditioned by the state of its body.
This does not square with truth, for, the soul
In that case, must remember in its current
Embodiment all about the bodies it assumed
In its earlier incarnations. It is not so.
It is possible only for You to be the smallest
Of the small and the greatest of the great.
For me this is impossible. So, O my Lord, who is
Dear to me, clarify this. What indeed is soul’s nature?
